My name is Bernadette Jenae. I work for Old Navy Corporate, and I am a Production Manager. A Production Manager basically works with a designer and a merchant and we make things happen. Production is the group that actually is the last stop to get it made. We actually manage all of the processes and the issues and the procedures that have to happen at the end of the day. So we definitely go out and get it made, get it shipped, and get it into the stores.

And this is just basically the factory spending examples of what it is the product's going to look like at the end of the day. So based on this, I'll look at this sample and look at the way that it's made and make sure that it's OK to go into production. If it's not, then I'll give them comments, and they'll then fix it so that I get another sample.

We spent a lot of time looking at costs, making sure that the product is still sound and that it passes testing. That's a lot of what we do, particularly in my area, is to make sure that the product is safe.

They look pretty much exactly the same to me.

I just love the interaction. I love that every day is different. The product's always new. The people you deal with are always new. And there's always different things to learn. I know this difficult sweater pattern is going to go to Hong Kong, because Hong Kong can handle very intricate patterns and techniques. Whereas I can't send it to India, because they can only do basic techniques. Based on that, I know Hong Kong is going to be more expensive. So if there's a lot of these, I'd know that we might have a costing challenge in sweaters by itself, just because of the intricate detail that's going into it.

In order to do my job well, you have to have very good communication skills. You have to be very concise in your discussions with other people. We have to realize that everybody is not speaking English as a first language, so your direction has to be extremely clear when you're talking to somebody.

And then you have fabric boards. Can I just start tagging your fabric boards?

You also have to be sensitive to world events. And there are fires. There there are floods. Maybe a strike in Bangladesh. And when you go to a merchant and you say, I need another week or two on this for these world events that are happening, you have to be as convincing as possible. Because they obviously don't want the product late, but you still need to make them be sensitive to the fact that there are things going on in the world that just people can't control.

The thing I love the most about my job is getting to travel and getting to meet people. Not so much in the most affluent areas, but getting to meet them everywhere.

We buy clothes every day. You always buy a t-shirt and you never know how it's made. I don't think that people really think that deep into it. But when you get to actually meet the people that are working really hard to make a pair of jeans, you kind of have another respect for those pair of pants on your butt, you know? It's kind of more like, wow, all of this. And now I'm sitting here on a sewing line with somebody who's actually in Peru or Mexico, and they do what I've asked them to do and what we've all brainstormed over here at corporate to do.

I think it's awesome. I love learning from different cultures and different people and the way that they express themselves. And learning to be friends with those people is awesome, too. Because I think I'm here to learn. And I don't think it ends when you're in school. I think it continues on. So I think my life is about learning and meeting others.

La Producción es la última parada de la fabricación. Nosotros gestionamos los procesos, cuestiones y procedimientos que deben ocurrir al final del día. Hacemos que fabriquen el producto, lo transportamos, y lo ingresamos a las tiendas.

Y este es una muestra que envía la fábrica de cómo se verá el producto al final del día. En base a esto, observo la muestra y cómo está hecha y me aseguro de que esté bien para enviarla a producción. Si no está bien, se los informo, y ellos la arreglan y me envían otra muestra.

Pasamos mucho tiempo analizando costos, asegurándonos de que el producto esté en condiciones y apruebe la evaluación. En mi área, eso es lo que hacemos, asegurarnos de que el producto sea seguro. Para mí se ven iguales. Me encanta interactuar.

Me encanta que todos los días sean diferentes.

El producto siempre es nuevo. La gente siempre es nueva. Y siempre hay diferentes cosas para aprender. Sé que este suéter irá a Hong Kong por su diseño, porque Hong Kong puede trabajar con diseños y técnicas complejas. Pero no puedo enviar esto a India, porque trabajan solo con técnicas básicas. En base a esto, sé que el de Hong Kong será más costoso. Si hay muchos de estos, sabré que podríamos enfrentar un alto costo en suéteres, solo por su diseño elaborado.

Para hacer bien mi trabajo, debes tener excelentes habilidades comunicativas. Debes ser muy conciso al discutir con la gente. Debemos saber que no todos hablan inglés a la perfección, entonces cuando hablas con alguien tus instrucciones deben ser muy claras.

Y luego tienes los entramados. ¿Puedo ver los entramados?

Además, tienes que comprender los sucesos mundiales. Hay incendios. Hay inundaciones. Quizá hay una huelga en Bangladesh. Y cuando hablas con un comerciante y le dices que necesitas una o dos semanas más por esos sucesos, tienes que sonar convincente. Porque no quieren que el producto llegue tarde, y tienes que lograr que entiendan que en el mundo suceden cosas que las personas no pueden controlar.

Lo que más me gusta de mi trabajo es viajar y conocer gente nueva. No solo a los lugares más conocidos, sino a cualquier lugar.

Todos los días compramos ropa. Compras una remera y no sabes cómo la hicieron. No creo que la gente piense mucho en ello. Pero una vez que conoces a la gente que trabaja duro para hacer unos jeans, comienzas a ver de otra manera a esos pantalones.

Es increíble. Y ahora estoy aquí sentada, con alguien que en realidad está en Perú o México, y que hizo lo que le pedí y aceptó todas las ideas de esta compañía. Creo que es maravilloso. Me encanta aprender de diferentes culturas y de diferentes personas y la manera en la que se manejan. Y aprender hacerse amigos de esas personas también es maravilloso. Porque creo que estoy aquí para aprender. Y no creo que se termine en la escuela. Creo que continúa. Así que creo que mi vida se trata de aprender y conocer a los demás.
